Embodied VoiceWork Workshop
3 mornings a week for 3 weeks

Embodied VoiceWork is a method exploring the resources and power within the process of freeing your voice. Through listening and sensing, each person will come into deeper relationship with their body and their own music. Through free vocal improvisation we come to understand non-verbal singing as a language. We will explore the vocabulary of the essentials of the language: resonance, tone and interval. Solo work evolves into duet, quartet and group work.

This work is about listening. This work is about making connection with the wisdom of your body and your breath. It is about connecting into deep impulse and then giving voice to what is heard and felt. This work opens our ears and sensitizes us to the liminal world of music. It cultivates a healthy, powerful vocal technique and opens individuals to a powerful experience of emotional, energetical and expressive aliveness.

EVW is a method applied in arts education, music therapy and human potential work. This workshop is open to anyone, both professional actors and singers, as well as someone who has trepidations about singing at all but is called to explore. It is open to people who have studied this work before as well as newbies. It is highly complimentary to the Michael Chekhov Acting technique.

Lisa Sokolov is a composer, singer and a full professor at NYU’s Experimental Theater Wing at Tisch School of the Arts Undergrad Drama. She performs and teaches internationally. Embodied Voicework REBOOT
A four-round reboot in Embodied VoiceWork. This course is for students who have studied with Lisa before. We will reconnect with the full warm-up and play some of the classic games including center improvs, intervals and vowels. Students are welcome to bring in material that they are working on, and we will take them to their next step. We will follow where the work and the groups’ interests lead us. It will be a joy.

What does it feel like to sing fully and freely from your entire body and being?

Embodied VoiceWork explores the resources and power within the process of freeing your voice. Explore vocal improvisation as an expressive language. Come into a deeper relationship to your body, your breath and your music. Open your ears and expand your listening. Improvise with others.

This workshop is open to everyone regardless of singing experience from professionals to those afraid to even make a sound. This work can open individuals to a powerful experience of aliveness. You will be surprised.

This work has been applied in the training of actors, dancers and musicians, as well as, the training of therapists and physicians, and in human potential work.
